False Fire Alarm – Fine Increase

BUILDING OWNERS, MANAGERS & RESIDENTS – TAKE NOTE!

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) will be prescribing a $350 increase in the fines associated with responding to False Fire Alarms. Effective as of 1 December 2016, the fine will increase to $1600 per chargeable alarm – so this announcement should serve as a good reminder (and motivator) to discuss, identify and rectify any existing alarm issues with your Fire Maintenance Provider.

Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) systems are a crucial component in building fire detection, and are designed to alert occupants and initiate quick responses by FRNSW in the event of a fire. Unfortunately however the number of false, or unwanted AFA callouts (specifically around 38% of responses in 2015!) diverts FRNSW resources that would, and should otherwise be available for genuine emergencies. It is hoped that this penalty increase, will ultimately contribute to a decrease in unnecessary callouts, therefore allowing the focus of FRNSW to be directed more efficiently towards genuine instances where emergency assistance is required.
